TL;DR

ChatGPT is the new 🐐 search engine. Now we gotta let the users decide which searches matter.

This project explores a UX enhancement for ChatGPT that helps users manage conversations more efficiently. The feature introduces Context-Aware Tab Creation: a simple, adaptive flow that shows responses inline and then asks whether the user wants to create a new tab for that topic.

What's the Problem

When users treat ChatGPT as a search engine, they frequently create new chats for every query. This leads to an overload of open tabs, user interface clutter, and increased cognitive load. Critical context can be lost as related queries become isolated, hindering user productivity.

Here's what I noticed while using ChatGPT:

  • I often want just a quick answer; not a whole new conversation.

  • If I open a new chat every time, my workspace starts looking like a messy desk.

  • I lose track

TL; DR

I want flexibility and control without the clutter.

User Insight

I talked to a few colleagues and did a quick survey with power users (people who use ChatGPT daily for research, ideation, and learning). Power users often perform rapid-fire queries, preferring context retention over fragmentation. Here's what i gathered from my conversations:

Framing the Problem

How might we give users control over conversation branching, while keeping the experience simple and seamless?

I framed it as:

"Let the answer come first. Let the user decide next."

Solution Overview

We wanted to make ChatGPT feel a bit more intentional; where everyday chats could easily turn into focused workspaces.

  1. User asks a question

User submits a query in the

current chat window

  1. Al Responds Inline

ChatGPT provides answer

directly in the conversation

  1. Prompt to Create Tab

Would you like to create a

new tab for this topic?

Impact Metrics

If implemented, this feature could meaningfully improve how users interact with their ongoing conversations. By introducing structure and clarity within the chat flow, we anticipate notable changes in user behavior and satisfaction.

FEWER OPEN TABS

FEWER OPEN TABS

Reduced average number of open tabs per active user session

HIGHER ENGAGEMENT

HIGHER ENGAGEMENT

Increased actions and interactions per individual chat session

LOWER ABANDONMENT

LOWER ABANDONMENT

Higher user satisfaction ratings and positive feedback scores

IMPROVED SATISFACTION

IMPROVED SATISFACTION

Decreased rates of context loss and task abandonment

Future Scope

Now that ChatGPT is moving toward building its own browser to rival Chrome, this feature could become a key part of how users organize their digital workspace itself. This concept opens up several possibilities for expanding how users organize and interact with their conversations. Some future features can be :

  1. Smart Continuity

Detect ongoing themes across sessions and prompt users to resume in an existing tab instead of starting a new one.

  1. Al Topic Grouping

Automatically detect patterns and cluster related conversations under smart topic tabs for improved context management.

  1. Workspace Mode

Allow users to manage multiple topic-based tabs simultaneously, supporting complex projects or multitasking workflows.

  1. Collaborative Tabs

Introduce shared tabs for team-based brainstorming or research, bridging the gap between conversation and collaboration.
